First Line Therapy

February 5th, 2008

Here at the CD Whyte Ridge Pharmacy we are currently promoting a new Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) program called First Line Therapy.

The purpose of this program is to help prevent many chronic health problems before they become more serious. Worldwide this is part of a growing trend and many Doctors are now using TLC programs as the first step in preventing and preventing conditions like:

• Alzheimer’s disease
• Arthritis
• Cardiovascular disease
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
• High blood sugar
• High cholesterol
• Osteoporosis
• Stroke

These programs are also supported by medical institutions, as I mentioned in the November 2007 Newsletter; even the United States Centre for Disease Control actively supports the creation of TLC programs:

“In 2002 the Healthy People Curriculum Task Force was
established with the mission of fulfilling objective 1-7 of
Healthy People 2010 (2,4), to “increase the proportion of
schools of medicine, schools of nursing, and other health
professional training schools whose basic curriculum includes
the core competencies in health promotion and disease
prevention.”

As an added bonus the First Line Therapy helps with patient issues like fatigue, low-sex drive and stress.

First Line Therapy involves tailoring a diet and exercise program for individual patients and, in that way, changing their lifestyle for the better. In this way the Therapy is, fundamentally, a long term process that deals with the underlying causes of disease as opposed to just the symptoms.

Best of all these types of programs are backed up with hard scientific facts: lifestyle change works. For example, in the March 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association a study was described that involved 337 volunteers who were taught about lifestyle choices as they influenced their health. The conclusion of the study was:

“This lifestyle modification program is an efficacious nutrition
and physical activity intervention in the short term and has the potential to dramatically reduce the risks associated with
common chronic diseases in the long term.”
