What is Specialty Compounding?

Specialty Compounding, in its essence, involves the trained pharmacist changing the medicine they are dispensing (with the approval of the attending physician). Compounding allows a pharmacist to remove unpleasant (or allergy-causing) dyes or preservatives; they can even add new flavours to make medicines more pleasant. In other situations new delivery systems can be developed such as lozenges, lollipops, gummies, dermal gels or liquid suspensions. For example, in the case of patients who cannot swallow pills, liquid suspensions can be created. It is even possible for a pharmacist trained in Specialty Compounding to create brand new medicines for their patients to reduce side-effects or to combine different medicines into a single application.

The idea behind Specialty Compounding goes back to the original role of pharmacists when they actually created medicines, not just dispensed pre-packaged products. According to the Professional Compounding Centers of America 60% of all drugs were compounded by pharmacists as recently as the 1930’s and 40’s in North America. Currently there are more than 5,000 Specialty Compounding Pharmacists in North America, Australia and Europe.
