What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal Fatigue is a syndrome that effects as many as 80% of North American adults at one point or another in their lives (according to http://adrenalfatigue.org/common.php). The syndrome is associated with periods of exaggerated and prolonged stress, stress generated by disease or any other cause. As the syndrome progresses the symptoms become more and more serious and interfere with every aspect of a patient’s life. In time other organs become affected and changes occur throughout the body and impact systems as diverse as cardiovascular and digestive.

Adrenal Fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands (located near the kidneys) can no longer produce enough hormones to regulate energy production throughout the body. These hormones are the key to having a body that can successfully deal with stress. If the stress (mental, physical or psychological or a combination of all of the above) goes on for too long then it is possible that the adrenals will fail to produce enough hormones and then the patient will begin to suffer from Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome.

Although Adrenal Fatigue is not recognized by conventional medicine it is a very serious condition that has been known by a variety of names over the years including neurasthenia and adrenal apathy. Some of the symptoms include:

  • Excessive tiredness that cannot be relieved by rest
  • A slow recovery time from stress or illness
  • Excessive reliance on caffeine or other stimulants to function
  • Feeling rundown all the time
